''Beowulf'' is an epic
poem about a legendary Anglo-Saxon king. Like many figures of legend, such as
King Arthur, Beowulf was probably based in part
on a real king whose story was told and
embellished for generations, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction.
The story is
set in Scandinavia in the 6th century. Beowulf, a hero of the
Geats, comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall in
Heorot has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel.
After Beowulf slays
him, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated.
The theme of the heroic code of chivalry |ˈʃɪvəlri| is the leading theme of Beowulf. The
honorable behavior and manners have dominated the Anglo-Saxon is the leading
theme of Beowulf. culture. Courage, bravery and the will to
fight were considered basic norms of that heroic code. Beowulf sticks to these
norms from the very beginning as he comes across the Danes.
